Box Art Reimagining: Zeronis
It's time to hunt down meteorite artifacts across the globe as we jump into Tomb Raider III. Our year-long project reimagining box art from the series will showcase the iconic Lady Lara Croft in a wide array of art styles. Expect to see her adventures represented in concept art, comic book art, and anime, among others.
This month we’re thrilled to reveal the Tomb Raider III tribute from Professional Digital Artist and former Senior Concept Artist at Riot Games, Paul Kwon!
Also know as Zeronis, Paul is best known for his work at Riot Games on League of Legends, notably concepts for the K/DA series which speak to Paul's core style. A bit more about Paul:
"Hey everyone! My name is Paul Kwon, aka Zeronis; I’m currently a full-time professional artist based in LA. I have worked in the game industry for 15+ years and started my career working for Blizzard Entertainment. After that, I joined Riot Games, designing many iconic and fun characters for League of Legends for the past 10 years. I went to Art Center College of Design in Pasadena 3 years before leaving to join Riot. I am a mostly self-taught artist. I really enjoy creating powerful and beautiful female characters. I often draw my own feelings and even draw and paint female character portraits for fun in my personal time!"
With Tomb Raider III, we knew the possibilities were endless given new styles added to Lara's wardrobe, including her iconic Area 51 outfit. Paul often plays with fashion and unique accessories in his designs, so we couldn't wait to see his take his take on Lara Croft via Tomb Raider III.
"Lara Croft from the Tomb Raider series has become one of the most iconic characters in the video game industry. For my reimagining of Lara, I revisited her outfit from Tomb Raider III and gave it a modernized twist to the design while still capturing the original essence.
"The pose is quite simple with the dual pistol that we are all familiar with. Yet, I wanted to depict her caught in the moment of stillness surrounded by digital fragments of artifacts amidst the holographic desert setting. The style of the background and the abbreviated title are heavily leaning towards the simple, technical and graphical designs to give that modernized look for the whole illustration.
"In terms of the style and execution, I went with the flow of what I’m most familiar with and tried to reminisce the character with some design sensibilities in mind."
If you're itching to sport Paul's work on your phone screen or add it as your desktop wallpaper, you can download a zip file featuring his work in different sizes here. As always, don’t forget you can also print this piece and pop it into your jewel case for an updated look!
