This day is reminiscent of all the victims of an unprecedented totalitarianism during the time of the National Socialism:
jews, Christians, Sinti and Romanies, disabled people, homosexuals, dissidents as well as members of the resistance,
scientists, artists, journalists, prisoners of war and deserters, old people and children at the front, forced laborers and
the millions of people who were disenfranchised, persecuted, tortured and killed.
On January 27th, 1945 the soldiers of the Red Army liberated the survivors of the extermination camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. The concentration camp Auschwitz (-Birkenau) is regarded as a symbol of the holocaust and the millions of victims of the Nazi
regime.
