In Tomb Raider’s “Turning Point” Debut Trailer back in 2012, a map stuck to the rocks on a shipwrecked beach was meant to pull focus – a clue to the game’s coastal Japan setting.

But instead, eagle-eyed fans were hung up on a different discovery in the frame... a crab with a little heart on its shell crawling nearby.

At the end of Rise of the Tomb Raider, the camera pans over a desk in Lara’s study that’s covered in maps and photos from her investigation into Trinity.

Look closely though, and you’ll spot a photo of Kennard Montez, a Trinity agent that Lara actually encountered in Tomb Raider: The 10,000 Immortals – a canonical tie-in novel that takes place between Tomb Raider and Rise of the Tomb Raider. The book follows Lara’s journey to discover the fabled Golden Fleece and ends with a confrontation between she and Kennard at Oxford where he narrowly escapes.

Rise of the Tomb Raider’s ‘Blood Ties’ DLC is loaded with easter eggs and callbacks from the franchise. You can find one of these in the secret crypt – a golden rose that in Survivor Trilogy canon is a reference to Lara’s grandmother, Rose. But fans of the Core Design titles will also notice it as a reference to the Golden Rose secrets.

After Lara has prevented the Maya apocalypse in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, she returns to Croft Manor where we see her in her study surrounded by artifacts from past adventures.

The final shot is a drawing Lara created as a kid – a T-Rex standing next to a pyramid – both callbacks to Lara’s first adventure, and both symbolic of Lara’s evolution into a tomb raider over the course of the Survivor Trilogy.

At one point in her adventure, Lara makes her way back out to the Endurance wreckage off the coast, where she finds herself back in her little cabin. If you examine the room closely, you’ll notice a stuffed octopus tucked to the side, a little nod to “Underpus” - the kraken from Tomb Raider: Underworld that – like FeeFee the Crab – fans have given a pet name. Because why not.
